Video documentaries attract a large audience due to their audio-visual appeal. When based on sound scientific data they are efficient sources of information and opinion forming, thus enhance the dispersal of ecological knowledge. Coastal ecosystems in Brazil have been studied for decades, however, video documentaries that accurately summarized ecological knowledge are still scarce. This in part is due to a lack of ecological syntheses by experienced scientists that is required to develop easily understandable scripts without omitting relevant information. Furthermore, it is also due to the need of video and sound capture at different seasons, leading to long and frequent periods of field acquisition and therefore to high production cost. We hope our video documentaries facilitate the comprehension of the coastal ecosystem of southern Brazil as well as stimulate a maritime mentality.
